Meet the RDs: Amanda Hernandez, RD

This month we interviewed Amanda Hernandez, who you may already know from @minutritionist, her blog nutritionistreviews.com, OR her recently published cookbook 30-Minute Family Meals! We enjoyed hearing about Amanda’s work with brands and she gives some great advice too! It’s awesome to hear about her first brand partnership (she gets really candid in this interview) to where she is today! She is a great example of going after what you want, staying persistent, and making it all happen.

Tell us a little about yourself, how did you get started as a dietitian and what do you do today?

Hi, I’m Amanda Hernandez, a dietitian that loves sharing healthy recipes, nutrition information and family life at www.nutritionistreviews.com. Find me on social media on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter. I am a mom of 3 and a lover of running, hiking, and spending time with family. I became a dietitian in 2012 and worked in long-term care for years before switching over to blogging full-time in 2017. I have been blogging for 11 years now and love it. I just wrote my first cookbook 30-Minute Family Meals and love getting creative in the kitchen and coming up with fun recipes!

What is your mission as a dietitian?

My mission as a dietitian is to help people learn that eating healthy can be delicious. I love to share creative fresh and seasonal recipes with others and I love when family and friends try my recipes and share how they love them- there is nothing more exciting to me than knowing that people are actually making my recipes!

What do you look for when choosing new products to buy or recommend?

I look for products that my family truly loves to recommend to others. I read the nutrition label, check the ingredients, and make sure that the product is something that I feel comfortable recommending. When it comes to new products to try, I love reading reviews before I buy.

What is the value of working with brands to both you and your audience?

For me, I have a passion for trying all different healthy products and sharing them with the world. I love getting creative in the kitchen and being able to make all different types of healthy recipes. For my audience, I love to help teach people all about nutrition, share healthy products they may be interested in using, and give meal ideas that they can make for their families.

How did you start working with brands?

I started many years ago with brand partnerships- probably 2013. Initially, I worked with brands only through networks and I think my first partnership was for $15 which I remember being very happy with haha! Through the years, I have worked directly with brands more and more often which I love even more.

What are some of the ways brands can work with you today?

I create sponsored recipe posts on my blog, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter. I also write about parenting, nutrition, and health topics. I enjoy making Instagram stories and Pinterest stories as well. I also do some freelance writing for different publications including making recipes for brand’s websites.

What advice do you have for other RDs who want to connect with brands?

I recommend just reaching out! Send a message to the brand telling them why you love them, what you can offer them and show them some examples of other work you have done in the past with brands. Don’t be frustrated if you don’t hear back right away- try again and reach out to a variety of brands that may be a fit. In this industry, it is not common to not hear back often and to be turned down often.

Do you have any advice for brands who want to connect with RDs?

I recommend understanding a dietitian’s value before reaching out and ensuring that you are valuing their time and expertise.

Just for fun, what is your favorite kitchen tool?

I love using a quality citrus juicer to squeeze lemons and limes and super sharp ceramic knives to make chopping easier.
